Good evening everyone.
We are setting up 2 servers which will provide remote usb connections to a 3 nodes cluster with hiperconvergence software on it.

The 2 servers will be connected to 8 to 15 gemalto usb card reader each with smartcards in it.
Those readers will then be accessed by different vms running on the 3 nodes cluster. Each reader will be connected to a single vm, reaching it when it needs to generate a signature provided by the certificates mounted on the card, around 1000 times a day per card, peaking at 3000 signatures per day.
Each vm will be connected to one reader on the first usb-server and one on the other, to provide redundancy in case of power outage.

The question is:
We are seeking a rackable microserver to be able to provide this kind of usb-server capability. We were thinking about 2 servers with 4gb ram, and at least a quad core processor, running the linux version of usb redirector on a debian or ubuntu stable release. Do you think that a solution like the one here stated should work well with the hardware above?

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance to everyone!
Alberto

Hi Alberto,

Even one server will be able to handle this scenario easily. The only thing you need to ensure is a good external power supply for USB hub and a good USB hub itself.

Thenk you very much peter. I've searched about licensing prices for the linux version, could you please confirm that this kind of version is free for both client and server?

Yes it is free, unless you need to re-distribute it as a part of your solution
